SABERTOOTH: Dr. Midnight – Live at the Green Mill
Delmark, 2007

FUN MAINSTREAM JAZZ – This band (two saxes + organ & drums) has played an after-hours set at Chicago’s Green Mill club – Saturday nights from Midnight ‘til 5am – for almost 15 years! So it makes sense that the band is really tight and the music is kind of loopy. Here they are doing what they do: soul-jazz, bop and oddball novelties. Great fun!

I love this! Try any track

1. 12:44 – happy march turns into a cool blues slide, a solid midtempo groove
2. 8:18 – speedy bebop romp; steams straight ahead, hoppin’ solos
3. 7:16 – happy conga-line Caribbean groove with really nice sax interplay
4. 11:00 – sweet flute duet in quiet Tahitian exotica; intoxicating & soulful
5. 10:38 – spoken intro; drunkenly ominous tune, like a mad scientist’s theme
6. 9:19 – old tv/movie theme swings at an easy midtempo
7. 8:31 – Grateful Dead song! – relaxed groove, funky organ in the middle
