Classical comedy, new-music, and jazz tracks all from this composer, born in 1913 and still-living. For ensembles of various sizes, 3 tracks with voices. The new music is rather accessible, as far as the genre goes.
“Comedy” classical tracks-
1.Lyrical overture, happy, songlike- references Bach?
4.A wrong march, modern piano & strings run & lurch w/cartoonishly high soprano wordlessly warbling
11.Great poem by his former wife, unfortunately hard to hear in this poor recording. Bits of recitation interleaved with wind and brass in speaking rhythms, bits of melody.
“Modern”
2.Pianos, violin, metallic percussion, semi-melodic, mid-temp. Reminiscent of busy public transport.
3.mid-slow. dissonant accordion, woodblocks & bells, high flutes. At times “looping”, though mostly loose & sparse, querulous.
9.clumsy dancing giant. Quiet end
10.quiet start, gamelan & bells, voices start shouting in panic about thin air, with sax squawks
“jazz”
5.Semi-improvized old-jazz in Art Tatum style. Fun piano duet. Could also go under “comedy” since it riffs on a famous Bach tune.
6-8.Cassette recording of composition originally commissioned by Benny Goodman in 1946, and it has that big-band sound. 6 fast, rousing. 7 bluesy, slow. 8 peppy, builds.
