TRAVIS SULLIVAN’S BJORKESTRA: Enjoy!
Koch, 2007

Modern-jazz big band plays Björk. I’m no expert on the original tunes, but these expanded interpretations sound pretty darn good to me. Singer Becca Stevens mirrors Björk’s twisty, dynamic vocal style, anchoring the tunes in their source, while the original hooks serve as launching points for some very good straight-jazz soloing. Not surprisingly, there’s a lot of spectacle in these songs. Worth a spin...

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9

1. 6:56 – upbeat, glorious sound, very busy arrangement; cool sax solo
2. 6:42 – [FCC: “fucking” at 4:24] – happy-strutting big-band groove
3. 4:33 – starts with reggae beat, very tricky vox; then swaggers, gets fast
4. 7:29 – slow ballad, swells gradually and meanders gently
5. 10:06 – driving, sinister groove, scribbly sax solos especially in 2nd half
6. 6:17 – ethereal intro to low slinky groove; great sound, becomes a bolero
7. 4:43 – slow, layered horns & quick rhythm, triumphant contemporary sound
8. 8:47 – instrumental: “big-band” themes, solo piano bit, free horn dialogue
9. 4:22 – quick electronic backing; thrusting, percolating horns
10. 3:12 – instrumental anthem: slow harmonies, just the horns
