ADAM SHULMAN QUARTET: On Second Thought
Kabocha, 2007

STRAIGHTAHEAD JAZZ – Local pianist’s debut CD, featuring all original tunes. It’s a nice, middle of the road disc, mostly ballads, with solid playing from some good local artists: Shulman has a relaxed, flowing touch and Dayna Stephens pops nicely on sax.

One word of warning: if you listen real close, there’s a persistent, high-pitched rattle that keeps popping up in the center background, and that just annoys the heck out of me. But aside from that, it’s a pretty good debut.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7

1. 7:35 – calm and steady midtempo, surges in the middle
2. 7:13 – upbeat modern bop, fluid sax & piano solos
3. 5:32 – easygoing and whimsical, a very gentle bounce
4. 6:03 – a lovely ballad, all gentle curves and warm solos
5. 5:09 – pensive and rather catchy: soft sax & buoyant piano
6. 9:46 – bright midtempo ballad, dances lightly
7. 7:14 – hushed ballad, floats like a feather on the wind
8. 6:03 – light, airy tone, soulful drum beat
