RICHARD UNDERHILL: Moment in Time
Stubby, 2005

MODERN JAZZ - Recorded in 2005 but only recently released in the U.S., the second CD by Canadian saxophonist Richard Underhill is a hard-swinging romp. Underhill's melodies are relatively simple, giving his tunes a fresh yet classic sound that's both welcoming and galvanizing. Pianist Luis Huerra adds a strong harmonic boost. Fun!

All good. Fo's Picks: 1, 4, 6, 7, 8

1. 5:51 - upbeat, rolling groove, walking bass pulse; hip piano, hot sax
2. 5:23 - happy hardbop: sunny piano stroll, sax extends feelers
3. 5:55 - chugging midtempo: tripping piano, slower sax into bright burst
4. 6:03 - thrilling rhythmic base, overheated solos, great drums & bass
5. 6:46 - relaxed, fluid tune with bold melody, angular solos
6. 4:40 - uptempo, tumbling hardbop, energetic, sounds like a classic
7. 7:13 - cool groove: juicy bass, secretive sax gets hyperactive, drum solo
8. 5:02 - propulsive hardbop: runaway sax, piano groove, cool drums
9. 4:34 - relaxed, angular swing, a late-nite groove; graceful trombone
10. 8:19 - quiet, dreamlike, gradually builds, becomes a merry carnival
