NEGRONI’S TRIO: Father & Son Cacao Musica, 2008 MODERN LATIN – Good stuff out of Miami, with the father/son tag-team of Jose (piano) and Nomar (drums) Negroni. Both like to bash away at their instruments, giving even ballads a forbidding intensity as they deftly balance the feel of traditional Latin music with bombastic abandon. Gets a little tiring after a while, but the individual tracks rule. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 10 1. 3:52 – slashing, fiery theme, solos have a nice groove 2. 6:02 – nifty blend of modern and old-fashioned; pretty melody, casual solos 3. 4:28 – energetic waltz, alternately thrusts, burns, and retreats 4. 3:59 – tight, almost-military stride through several rhythmic shifts 5. 4:21 – aching ballad with soulful fem vocal. Yeah, whatever… 6. 5:08 – flowing midtempo ballad blends with a heavy strut 7. 4:05 – sweeping traditional-sounding tune, good percussion, quotes Chopin 8. 6:58 – cheesy keyboard intro, then rolls, stomps & burns 9. 4:07 – classic tune, played with heart and subtlety over modern beat 10. 5:00 – spinning theme into rolling jazz groove, with sudden turns [ Fo ] 6-Apr-08 | ||
