Field recordings and interviews (monologues, actually) made along the mighty Danube, from its headwaters in the Black Forest to its delta at the Black Sea. Along the way, we hear from hoteliers, boat captains, artists, sheep, geese, coal barges, and the river itself. All monologues are in the local language, so no English except for the translations provided in the booklet. Nice concept and execution. Recommended.

CD1:
1. Two short monologues on the living quality a river and the lifelong feeling of connection made with that river when one is a child; lots of babbling brook; calming
2. Sheep bleating, river flowing, cathedral bells pealing, no talking
3. Talk of a big spring flood in 1999 and ambiance
4. Water flowing through a tunnel; more talk of a youth spent by the river; then cathedral bells and continued water burbling over rocks; then the violence of water flowing over dam spillway
5. A bit of burling; some (more) talk of how not living near the Danube is unimaginable (by now I'm ready to pick up and move there myself); the burbling turns to a rush of water over some rapids and then the trickle of water down a courtyard drain; some rustling, as if crickets in the reeds on a summer afternoon
6. A mill (waterwheel) clicking as it turns with the current; clattering in the mill; the
builder of this mill, built just as a tourist attraction, talks about how the many working
mills have closed and people now don't even know of them
CD2:
1. Water; a boat captain speaking again about a river being alive; rhythmic hum of a boat motor; water splashing against the bank; a story about a guy who used to float down the river on his back, naked, while reading a paper, and one time someone called an ambulance thinking it was a corpse
2. Water; small waves rhythmically hitting bottoms of moored boats; insect sounds from
the reed beds; some machinery; then a quiet forest, no water
3. Water, some herons cawing; old fisherman talking about the old days; more serious water flowing
4. Quacking geese on an autumn afternoon; gentle banging of water on a floating dock;
talk about Novi Sad during the recent wars; some splashing from fishermen; and by now, the river is quite large and rapid, so burbling has turned to louder rushing
CD3:
1. While we listen to frogs croaking, an old man talks about the displacement of some
villages at the time the river was dammed in a narrow gorge; talk of the river as a
companion in good times and bad; sounds of water being bailed from a boat; birds chirping
2. The rumbling of a coal barge's engine and the splashing of waves against the hull;
some muffled talking in a clearing near a river; some stuff, sounds like PVC pipes,
hitting the water - don't know
3. Frolic in the reeds for a bit; talk about how some islands in the delta are actually
floating and therefore the landscape changes from day to day; also how there are lots
of things to eat there, provided by nature, free; pastoral summer day with buzzing,
chirping, quacking - an aural portrait to be sure; now near the mouth of the river and
the Black Sea, we hear a rush of water
