Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2008-11-01 | ||
Slow, mostly acoustic songs with off-key female vocals. A downtrodden and sad sound, quite lo-fi with imperfect tuning and singing. Acoustic guitar, occasional violin. There's a delicate sense of magic here, but Pixie (vocalist) doesn't take herself too seriously, as noted by the goofing-off sound samples on 1,2,6, and especially 5. Vocals are hard to take sometimes, but I really dug moments like the violin rising on track 7. Overall, I like the attitude and honesty here. 1- *FCC* Distorted crowd noise and conversation. Then, a delicate chiming song. 2- Skittery, free-jazzy intro. Noisy avant-garde hoedown! 3- Gentle. Sad story about a girl losing her (loser) dad. Some points are kind of funny (on purpose I hope) 4- Sparse and lost; slow double-tracked vocal. Floating strangeness. 5- Opens w/some goofing around. Mid/fast(!), jangly, dark 6- Recording of some kind of auctioneer. Random. 7- Slow, spare. A sad, despairing sound; violin provides some sublime moments. 8- Live. Folky and slow, but gets nicely intense. Lo-fi and oversaturated. 9- Straight-folky strumming and decent singing. Nice midtempo, upbeat and melodic, with cute fairytale-like lyrics. Even more lo-fi than most tracks. |
