JEFF COFFIN & CHARLIE PEACOCK: Arc of the Circle Runway, 2008 POSTMODERN JAZZ – A slippery meeting between longtime Bela Fleck reeds player Coffin and pianist/producer Peacock. Each track has a unique perspective: the pair dance and weave through electronic/guitar atmospheres that can be ethereal or jamming, often changing course mid-stream. This could fit into a lot of different settings; check it out. All good. Fo's Picks: 2, 5, 6, 10 1. 4:52 – impressionistic improv, comes in waves: bluesy, gentle, crashing 2. 6:19 – robotic soul-jazz jam loosens up, gives way to brooding solos 3. 3:03 – lilting, sunny melody w/ minimal drums; turns spiky, electronic end 4. 6:53 – sax & piano buried in propulsive mix, then a gentle jazz ballad 5. 3:08 – chunky melody gets in your face, some modern-classical touches 6. 2:34 – moody, lyrical duet, a bit heavy-hearted but very nice. 7. 1:51 – almost insectoid intro, sax & piano get into brief, stormy improv 8. 5:29 – gentle and pretty, with depth; straight-jazz into deep piano solo 9. 4:23 – spacious, moody ballad: solo sax, solo piano, together, slow fade 10. 3:38 – chopped-up smooth/swing groove with cool breakdowns [Fo] – 5/10/08 |
