MOSTLY OTHER PEOPLE DO THE KILLING: Shamokin!!
Hot Cup, 2007
AVANT-WACKY – Bassist Moppa Elliott's band merges "normal" jazz with free noise, careening wildly across styles & eras and having a blast. All members of the quartet are quite insane, yet completely in sync. Trumpter Peter Evans and sax man Jon Irabagon in particular have crazy chops; both are partial to animal squeals and moans. Fun!
All excellent. Fo's Picks: 1, 2, 3, 8, 10
1. 5:51 – warped boogaloo shuffle, mad trumpet break, soulful sax flips out
2. 8:28 – drunken horns over slap-bass; wounded sax, amazing trumpet!
3. 3:51 – speedy, gleeful bop disintegrates; squealing sax, great drums
4. 7:49 – creaky smooth-latin groove, slippery trumpet, fluid sax w/groans
5. 4:52 – easy stroll along the edge, nice bass solo, then horns jump in
6. 4:33 – standard reimagined: starts as slow blues, becomes fast & furious
7. 3:51 – jazz waltz seems pasted together, tries to fly apart but holds on
8. 6:42 – horns romp over zombie walk, bowed bass solo gets creaky
9. 6:38 – sinister vamp battles with carnival atmosphere, fun sax solo
10. 21:32 – cool solo drums for 6:50, quotes everybody. Speedy bop standard is played straight once, then each horn gets several minutes alone: sax muses, trumpet does impossible things.
