The 808 beats and basslines of these tracks are adequately blurpy and mechanically funky to hit the right retro buttons, but the (French femme) vox here are neither ennui-d enough for true Gallic sublimity or peppy enough to excite – they’re just comme ci, comme ça. It’s all alternately ignorable or catchy, depending on your mood. The first time I listened through this, I instantly forgot it. This time, I’m quite enjoying it, though it may yet again prove an ephemeral pleasure. But tracks 6 and 7, as some sort of contractually obligated soft/downtempo segment/intermission, are not worth your time.
