Bay Area Hip Hop with some of the best rhythm anywhere. About half the tracks are killer funk, and about half are more “modern R&B” which is a sound the turns me the hell off – but the vocals are always astounding. Best bits are where the vocals provide rhythmic counterpoint to the funk, like ttrack 14.
No FCCs, although there are moments when it’s obvious what’s been blanked out (like the skit, track 12) – very few of those, basically squeaky clean and good for play at all hours.
The good tracks are very, very, very good – try 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, 14, 18…
1. 0.06 six seconds of album title.
2. 3:24 ****squeepy and funky and brilliant.
3. 3:12 ***faster and still super funky, female chorus. Both males can rap like fuck! Amazing rhythm.
4. 4:00 *slow clapped beat, modern “R&B”, failed love lyrics. I hate the music, but his rap is still amazing.
5. 3:46 **rap and clapped beat continues from previous cut, less of the “R&B” feel, autobiography lyrics.
6. 1:23 adenoidal complaining and support group – pretty funny…
7. 3:24 ****pounding beat, low key rap that provides the syncopation. Terrific stuff.
8. 3:43 ****OW!! Bass-heavy downtempo funk. YES! I love it, too. It’s actually a love song (which I usually hate.)
9. 3:50 **downtempo with female chorus. Chorus is crap, rap is the poop.
10. 4:03 **scratching noise goes from one channel to the other… mellow swingy hip-wiggler riddim, vocals put together well.
11. 3:53 *very slow Blaxploitation (Japsploitation?) funk/”R&B”… A bit too much of the “R&B” element for my tastes.
12. 1:25 Ha! Great airport security skit.
13. 3:11 ****J-pop meets rap. Pure candy! Anti-war message, with bits that sound like Jello Biafra.
14. 4:08 ****excellent downtempo funk. If you ain’t wiggling, your spine is broken. Some of the best vocal rhythms on the disk.
15. 4:42 **slow with some processed vocals, spoken rap, incredibly intense lyrics about the death of a friend. I didn’t care for the music much, but the track left me bawling…
16. 4:03 **chorus intro, then a rave beat, then something other. Lots of bass, interesting lyrics. Ends several seconds early.
17. 0:57 sound collage, bits from different tracks.
18. 2:54 ***rather downtempo funky riddim with moments of hard rock.
