TIN CUP SERENADE
Self-Release, 2008

ODDBALL SWING – San Francisco band sort of in that Squirrel Nut Zippers old-time vein, plays every Wednesday evening at Le Colonial. Rolf Wilkinson sings with a smooth but almost amatuerish voice, an odd mix of wide-eyed crooning, friendly warmth and cool detachment. The band itself is solid, with some nice horn work. Good clean fun.

Fo's Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9

1. 2:11 – upbeat and breezy, a light but chunky stomp
2. 4:56 – classic trad jazz tune, a nice bluesy drag with good solo breaks
3. 2:13 – happy daydreamy tune, a gentle stroll
4. 3:06 – uptempo rhythm, laidback vocal, lowdown horns: a cool mix
5. 3:15 – relaxed jazzy walk, very sweet, with out-of-tune piano
6. 3:30 – slow, bittersweet waltz with baritone sax and sly vocal
7. 2:41 – midtempo bluesy glide, winding vocal, piano break
8. 2:53 – the 8,264,791st recorded version of "Stack O'Lee": a slow drag
9. 4:32 – intriguing tune: weary melody with slinky horns & rhythms
10. 3:25 – cute calypso groove, but the lyrics are about Canada
11. 4:16 – jazzy blues, aching vocal and unison horns; brief solos
