Psychedelic and sometimes country/folk + spoken word. This is a collaboration between Spacemen 3/Spectrum’s Sonic Boom and producer Jim “Captain Memphis” Dickson (who’s worked with Big Star, Ry Cooder, Replacements & a ton of others). Really nice stuff overall. ((((((1))))) Gorgeous poppy/krautrock-y electroc-throb. Sonic Boom is a master of this sound. ((((2))))) Nice, rambling country-folk ballad of the doomed early 60’s R&B/soul singer. (((((3)))) Fiddle, sax & organ laced, new version of a great old Spectrum number. How the hell was this NOT a hit? ((((((4)))))) Jazzy bass, low-down & slinky piano, crickets and some groggy spoken vocals. Full of funny double-entedres. Kinda like New Orleans version of Stephen Jesse Bernstein. (((((((5))))))) Super hazy, kinda creepy covered of the Mudhoney “downer classic”. Long noodly outro. ((((6)))) Slow, clangy, Nick Cave-like tune with disjointed guitars, theremin and storytelling lyrics. (((((7)))) Floaty, psych-pop-folk tune with a simple lyrics & chorus. Great guitar fuzz but runs a little too long. ((((8)))) Fiddle-based psych folk instrumental with sitar & acoustic guitar all mix together. ((((9))))) Uppity version of #1, kind of similar of Faust’s “Krautrock” but poppier. |
