DAFNIS PRIETO SEXTET: Taking the Soul for a Walk Dafnison, 2008 MODERN JAZZ – Drummer/composer Prieto has emerged as one of the most original voices on the scene, with a striking new hybrid vision of Latin and postbop jazz. He has an awesome band for this all-original set, with Peter Apfelbaum and Yosvany Terry on saxes, Avishai Cohen on trumpet and Manuel Valera on piano. Bracing, exciting music. All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 12 1. 6:55 – bustling, bursting tune: compelling theme, cool sax/piano/drum solos 2. 7:25 – lyrical but agitated tune, swells and deflates, with shifting emotions 3. 5:06 – resolute theme woven through tender breaks and direct solos 4. 5:24 – romantic Latin ballad featuring lush piano, expressive bass 5. 2:00 – busy drum line, rhythmic horn fanfare 6. 6:09 – strong percolating theme, bright horns, melodica adds exotic touch 7. 4:10 – breezy waltz-like trio ballad: lilting piano, very fine drums 8. 5:23 – uptempo bustle: intriguing mix of Latin and other elements 9. 5:08 – tense, a bit cinematic with great rhythmic structure 10. 5:15 – upbeat jazz stroll w/flute, busy rhythm, grows more insistent 11. 3:49 – moody nocturnal theme, loosely structured, a bit stormy 12. 5:45 – comes together gradually: a busy stride over calm Fender Rhodes [ Fo ] 22-Jun-08 |
