NICHOLAS PAYTON: Into the Blue
Nonesuch, 2008

MELLOW GROOVES – The modern-cool tracks on this CD may recall ‘70s soul, ‘80s Miles Davis, ‘90s acid-jazz or the sounds of hip young trumpeters like Christian Scott or Jeremy Pelt. But those are just touchpoints: Payton has his own, very personal thing going on here, and he sounds completely at ease doing it. It’s a fine chill-out session, engaging but not demanding, with a couple of instant classics (2 & 6).

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6 (1, 4 & 10 also good)

1. 6:25 – smoky cool ballad: stately beginning, then a thoughtful glide w/bongo
2. 7:29 – sweet, soulful vibe: slippery rhythm, relaxed trumpet & keyboard
3. 11:50 – laid-back groove, very catchy, moves from smooth to insistent
4. 4:01 – after-hours ballad, romantic and wistful, very nice trumpet sound
5. 6:15 – neo-soul, stripped down with some electronics at the edge
6. 6:06 – ooooh… deliciously simple melody on a slinky rhythm. Super-cool.
7. 4:40 – sneaky trumpet & keyboard over a funky New Orleans beat
8. 4:40 – slinky ballad with unconvincing soul vocal (by Payton)
9. 7:49 – smooth stroll over a steady New Orleans beat
10. 6:24 – cute melody struts over cool percussive groove; nifty keyboard solo
