Davis goes over the edge into avant-garde territory with these piano/sax-led pieces. Marvellous stuff that falls more on the improv side than the composed side, with a playfully adventurous attitude -- lots of attitude. Piano can be gnarled and heavy, but on tracks like 7 displays a playful light touch. Tony Malaby on sax flutters, darts, and sometimes piles on the heavy storming. Doesn't sound quite like your normal "improv" session, nor is it a carbon copy of '60s free jazz. It's fresh, and impressive.

- Big, lumbering intro, into a quieter zone that builds into a machine-like groove.
- Jagged and stumbling. Cool stuff.
- Cautious, sneaking, but blossoms into a dire midtempo composition with some really nice sax soloing
- Pleasantly fast jam, scattered and carefree
- Delicate and slow
- Mid/fast, gets growly
- Quiet, light, fast parts interspersed with a dark, dire composition. Lots of fun, smart-alecky piano in there. Ends with tiny tiny pecking.
- Abrasive sax flutters, a slowly tumultous improv.
