GUILLERMO KLEIN Y LOS GUACHOS: Filtros
Sunnyside, 2008

MODERN JAZZ – Flexible and rousing 11-piece band with a unique sound that incorporates some Argentinean and old-world folk ideas in very tricky arrangements. Klein also provides soft vocals on several tracks. Should match well with Dafnis Prieto, currently in A-File.

All very nice. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9

1. 7:31 – vocal intro; gently rocking tune takes off with expressive sax solos
2. 10:03 – rolls & perks: simple melody, nice solos, great time-shifting breaks
3. 3:22 – slow & melancholy: sax duet first time through, then larger group
4. 6:10 – hushed, suspended tune with quiet vocals, builds up and blossoms
5. 3:01 – dramatic duet vox wrapped in complex instrumental harmony
6. 6:46 – strange dreamy march gives way to rolling contemporary fusion
7. 5:52 – serious song, somewhat plaintive band envelops heartfelt vocal
8. 11:04 – forward momentum; metric tricks make it sound direct or tentative
9. 6:32 – interesting rework of an Argentine folk song: gently twists, gets busy
10. 7:35 – slow, gentle melody: long sax tones, billowing sadness
