PIERANUNZI/JOHNSON/BARON: As Never Before

MODERN JAZZ – One of the most lyrically intriguing trios in jazz joins up with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler for a set of sober, introspective originals. Wheeler’s sour, wavering tone splashes against Pieranunzi’s pretty, billowing melodies and flowing solos to create a strange, bittersweet air. It’s good, but it might grate on some ears.
