blink.: The Epidemic of Ideas
Thirsty Ear, 2008

Postmodern jazz quartet with lots of rock elements, electronic touches and occasional oddball instrumentation. The pieces are varied and unusual, with a careful balance of composition and improv. But they also seem a bit sterile, content to rest as curiosities rather than reaching out to engage the listener. Good, but it’s missing a certain spark.

Fo’s Picks: 5, 7, 9, 11, 12

2. 2:29 – bashing drums, 4-note bassline, sax sketches melody, guitar squeals
3. 9:15 – midtempo stroll with stops, tight sax/guitar dialogue, clomping end
4. 1:47 – atmospheric interlude: odd bass sounds, small noises, moody sax
5. 4:06 – scattered pieces, picks up a sort of lazy/funky air
6. 1:29 – very cool monotone rhythm; they could have done more with this!
7. 9:34 – clockwork rhythm drifts gradually into searing paranoia, drifts away
8. 4:30 – slow and mysterious, lumbering rhythm and piercing sax
9. 3:03 – midtempo, moves in parallel lines, then quickly spinning
10. 1:25 – languid interlude, soft and rounded
11. 8:03 – straightforward groove changes to quirky percolating improv
12. 6:33 – simple, chord-based ballad, almost a lullaby; nice sax, weird guitar
