Album Review

Reviewed 2009-01-26
A funky and soulful album that evokes southern bayous, Music for Dorothy delivers rump-shaking tunes and heartfelt ballad. Shades of Southern rock and the blues are punctuated by guitar, saxophone, harmonica and Hammond B3 organ solos. Straightforward lyrics take a backseat to the instruments.
Fun Facts: The album was recorded in a barn alongside the Colorado River.
All FCC Clean
1. (4:01) Funky, hard-hitting number built around a hooky chorus.
2. (5:04) Harmonica intro rock number. Nothing to do with The Standells hit about Boston, this “Dirty Water” is a Southern thing.
3. (3:22) An ode to makin’ love.
4. (3:48) Slow, soulful vocals and guitar-picking underscored by a wailing Hammond organ and lit up with a sax solo.
5. (3:47) Upbeat and bluesy giving way to a slow, melodic breakdown.
6. (2:55) Spoken/sung vocals and hooky chorus. 7. (4:28) Rhythm heavy ditty with a Latin-clave beat.
8. (4:02) Swamp-blues guitars with a mellow interlude and sonic meltdown ending.
9. (6:09) Long, slow jam track.
10. (5:17) The album’s funkiest track of course has funk in its name.
11. (2:40) An instrumental coda with crickets.
