JOE LOCKE: Force of Four Origin, 2008 MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Modern-bop vibraphonist debuts a dynamic new quartet. Locke is fast and fluid, with an airy, shimmering attack. Putting vibes and piano together enhances that light, cascading sound. This is probably too middle-of-the-road for KZSU, but it’s nice stuff. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6 1. 6:16 – light sing-song theme gives way to uptempo, rolling vibe/piano solos 2. 8:26 – thoughtful tune, daydreams and spirals 3. 8:03 – retro (‘70s) jazz sound, summery feel, light & upbeat but propulsive 4. 7:20 – sneaky little groove with muted trumpet; lightly funky 5. 5:29 – slowly billowing ballad; piano and vibes fit together nicely 6. 6:58 – brisk, fusion-y touch, tenor sax adds some heft 7. 8:29 – flowing, modernized take on an old movie theme 8. 4:51 – easygoing tune with sax, slow-chugging riff [ Fo ] 26-Oct-08 | ||
