ERI YAMAMOTO TRIO: Redwoods
AUM Fidelity, 2008

MODERN JAZZ – Excellent, creative mainstream jazz by pianist Yamamoto and her longstanding trio. Yamamoto excels at creating immersive scenes: self-contained worlds spun from crystalline emotional cores and saturated with tonal color. Her ballads are gorgeous and her uptempo numbers are exciting. Highly enjoyable.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

1. 6:00 – rocks gently: simply-stated bass, bittersweet piano, sweeping end
2. 4:12 – happy stroll, steady beat: introspective piano solo meanders quietly
3. 7:17 – bumpy rhythm: relaxed trio interplay, grows loose, cool drum solo
4. 9:09 – beautiful, calmly enveloping ballad inspired by Muir Woods
5. 6:04 – driving uptempo; excellent piano, serious, with great harmonies
6. 6:17 – pretty ballad, plays expansive optimism against chilly undertones
7. 5:09 – slow, hushed ballad: graceful curves with a bittersweet air, bass solo
8. 4:03 – uplifting, sturdy ballad with almost a gospel touch
