ART BLAKEY/GIANTS OF JAZZ: Live at the 1972 Monterey Jazz Festival

BEBOP – The Giants of Jazz were an all-star touring band that played festivals from 1971-72. Dizzy Gillespie was star soloist, but he couldn’t make this gig. So two swinging trumpeters (Roy Eldridge and Clark Terry) took his place. It isn’t the band’s best night, and the recording is rough, but it’s lots of fun and features one of Thelonious Monk’s last good performances (he made only a handful of appearances after 1972).

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 7, 8

1. 2:45 – long spoken intro…
2. 13:56 – hot bebop jam: horns blow merrily, Blakey bashes, Monk wanders
3. 5:15 – piano out front on Monk’s moody ballad; nice sax too (Sonny Stitt)
4. 15:20 – bouncy jam: starts out rough, but the lengthy solos are quite fine
5. 3:42 – ballad: punchy trumpet & sympathetic backing
6. 3:03 – ballad: sinuous trombone, sweet piano & bass
7. 2:51 – ballad: sexy sax has a lot to say
8. 2:41 – ballad: oh my… excellent trumpet, rich piano, just works beautifully
9. 9:52 – fast bebop: drums almost overwhelm it, strong solos restore balance
