Album Review

A lush, low key soul-folk-country effort. The album is produced very nicely, and the ebbs and tides are smooth. This is not a traditional folk or country record; the guitars are seldom acoustic, and the other-genre influences definitely make it hard to classify by a certain genre. Lambchop are known for breaking boundaries in their sound; this record sounds like Barry White meets Wilco. It’s like a Dave Matthews Band on tranquilizers and with subtlety and restraint, merged with a folksy Belle and Sebastian. The record is very loungey and chill, and the rhythm section is so tasteful. Recommended. No FCC violations noted.

1. Light, soft percussion, and Wagner’s smooth voice, horns and winds give it sort of a retro and jazzy feel (2:25)
2. One of the more folky songs on here, catchy guitar and vocals, sweet, melodic backing vox, prominent woodwind refrain (4:50)
*3. Slow builder with funky bass guitar, vulnerable vocals and oblique lyrics, melodic accompaniments, song picks up with 2:00 left (6:18)
4. Moderate, upbeat tempo, alt country influence is somewhat present here, ‘he thought he was a citizen, but only in the Vegas sort of way’; jam bridge (5:59)
*5. A rhythmic-oriented, slow groove, very soulful, relaxed (5:39)
6. Guitar based, light feel, folksy, interweaving guitar/piano (4:35)
7. Bridge with horns woodwinds, soulful backing female vox, constructed around voice and rhythmic guitars (3:03)
8. Repetitive lyrics about ‘standing up,’ downtempo, slowly builds to lush conclusion (3:39)
*9. Background skitters for 30 seconds, interesting guitar parts build to vocally interesting choruses, loungey rhythm, breaks down to an interesting, up-tempo jam with a little under 2:00 remaining (6:18)
10. Lush horns and orchestration build around a sweet, nostalgic, light tune, lyrics are a bit strange (3:53)
11. Surreal, sleepy, slightly repetitive pop song, cover of Don Williams song (3:28)
