DONALD BAILEY: Blueprints of Jazz, Vol. 3
Talking House, 2008

POSTBOP – Bay Area drummer Donald “Duck” Bailey, best known for backing organist Jimmy Smith in the 1950s-60s, here presents a surprisingly oblique, gleefully bashing quartet with Odean Pope on sax.

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8

1. 6:13 – loose-jointed burner with angular theme, tightly knotted sax solo
2. 6:25 – one-chord theme, chugging beat, heavy harmony: the trolls get down
3. 8:59 – cool, laid-back groove in 5/4 time, builds up gradually from solo bass
4. 4:22 – strange downward-sloping waltz: everything seems to slip and slide
5. 6:20 – rolling “Giant Steps” style chord-hopping propulsion
6. 6:56 – ballad for sax and bass: moody lyricism + odd angles; crazy ending
7. 6:42 – straightforward postbop walk leads to twists and turns in the solos
8. 12:28 – awesome solo bass pulse, then stern & striding midtempo with Charles Tolliver on trumpet... a strong sound throughout
9. 4:41 – Bailey plays harmonica! A sweet ballad.
