Abstract sax duets, sparse sound but busy feel. Not as repetitious as Phillip Glass; also jazzier than that, and even swingy. Loosely composed framework (you'll hear them change styles in unison quite a lot) but also lots of room for improvising. Poking, pointillistic sounds and lots of fast mood changes -- it'll get soft and quiet for a minute, then more brisk, then more liquidy, then more prickly. Grab one of the two CDs, pick your spot, and play a few minutes' worth. The lack of chords/drums might break certain shows' rhythms ... but sometimes that's what you're looking for. DISK 1- Moves at a good fast pace. Some highlights: -47:30... some intense digging, briefly -35:00... brief droning -29:00... fast jumbly part, then some grunty sax. -26:45... starts a slow, warbly, slightly silly phase -21:20... Long phase of unison pecking. (This part sounds really cool on fast forward or rewind) -16:30... Softly jazzy murmurs -12:15... Fluttery shrieks; birds yelling at you -11:00... Unison pecking again, then some growling -4:05... Weird rolling notes, running up and down DISK 2- Calmer; still fast but less pointy. Fluid intro, then slow, almost ballad-like. Relaxed yet warbly; this goes on for a while. Comes to a good STOP at -36:51 -- those first 9 minutes would be a good excerpt. -33:15... A runup to a faster, twirling part, then some nice big unison lines -29:40... Long composed stretch that gets into declarative, long-noted lines, then grumpy, growly soloing. -21:33... Slower, quieter; lots of little flitting -18:00... Slow warbling that builds into a cool pairing of low fluttering and high soloing. It's actually lovely, but then gets darkly growly and aggressive. -13:46... Unison perkiness, eventually into some lumpy improvising -7:15... Very quiet, slow. Then abrasive popping. -4:40... Bird fight again! |
