Susan Alcorn - Curandera
Alcorn plays pedal steel guitar in an improv and free-folk context, but she's also used it in its more traditional C&W role; here there's some of both; she plays some covers but not very conventionally. The whole album is quiet, introspective, and deliberate; the sound is echoy. Suitable for after midnight and the middle of nowhere. Loren Connors fans would like this.
Best: 1, 5, 6
1. Long liquid slides on single strings; think arid desert psychedelia. Slow pace.
2. Sort of wandering tune that flirts with folkish melodies (I keep almost hearing "Black is the Color"). Occasionally bursts of "out" improvish playing.
3. Long cover of a Tammy Winette tune starts out with low reverberating strums. The material doesn't really suit the style of playing.
4. Messiaen cover. Extremely slow moving but a very rich, beautiful sound.
5. Improv that's like Christina Carter if she were more interesting, even though nothing seems to happen. (But then, nothing needs to happen.)
6. Mayfield cover. Sounds hymn-like.
7. Like 2.
