Piano-led jazz with thick, dark chords, often a heavy feel, but also plenty of fast, brisk moments. Often resembles straight jazz -- 1,4,8,10,13 But can pile on the weirdness too -- 2,3,11,12 It's all acoustic, with none of the electronica dabblings Shipp has been into. I love the rattly wood sound of Joe Morris' bass. Whit Dickey on drums adds a chattery jazz feel. 1- Upbeat, skippy patterns. Plinky. 2- Sudden and chaotic, fast. An exhiliarating jumble, although you do wonder if there's planning to it or just flailing. 3- Slowish, heavy. Like a very dark club jazz. A rambling little journey. 4- Mid/fast, crystalline, open. Eventually, familiar chords bubble up. 5- Creeping rainy-day comfort 6- Scattery skipping, a light kind of fast chaos 7- Dark repeating riff. Short, but with some awesome drums. 8- Sinister but catchy, darkly tuneful. Nearly straight club-jazz soloing. 9- Quirkily bluesy, sparse. Playful. Oversaturates in spots? 10- Soft and lush, but in a rather heavy way. 11- Fast spewing. Gets thunderous. Nifty drum solo. 12- Slow, heavy. Lots of bowed bass. 13- Brisk and swingy 14- Heavy hard pounding, violent and slow. |
