Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2009-05-31
Guitar music, not improv but more like old school guitar trio music for the sake of it, like the way Jeff Beck, Pat Martino and Dire Straits did it. No vocals (unlike Dire) but this is just good studio composition that worships the lost art of good guitar playing. Really, I’m not sure which djs I had in mind when I kept this (and ended up reviewing!) but I figured that Wedge and Ragnar and Howes and Gabe (“the old” gabe, but hey, the more I get to know the new one, I’ll throw you in too). You could call this wanky but ironically that’s exactly what I called Dire Straits when I first heard them while tripping on acid in 1979.

1) pleasant with a disjunct 4/4 beat that leaves out a “4” here and there to distinguish it, just nice guitar
2) upbeat and driving, slightly funky, exactly midway is shifts to a mellow breakdown but only briefly
3) this is pretty, and it makes me realize how much I love good guitar playing, this has a “mellower” tone
4) chorus’y pretty guitar picking
5) jamming, with a prog feel for sure
6) pretty, a big mellow, searing guitar takes edge off, mellow breakdown/bridges
7) “cover” of Paul Simon’s “50 Ways”, chill and the guitar EASILY handles all the vocal parts, cool but borders on smooth jazz so it will work if you slip into a set with an ironic attitude (but its actually very very beautiful, oh lord don’t let me be misunderstood)
8) slightly heavier feel, rockin with good sustain, but time warp jumps all over the place into complex rhtymic wankiness, back and forth 9) very offtime but melodically complex, very nice use of guitar
10) lilting rhythme despite the complex beat, another fine one
