DANIEL SADOWNICK: There Will Be a Day
In Time, 2009

MODERN/LATIN JAZZ – Ace conguero Sadownick shows his range with a set of original tunes grounded as much in bebop and modern jazz ideas as in Afro-Cuban rhythms. There’s a streetwise angle here that’s part tough-guy swagger, part smooth urban soul, marked by thickly layered percussion and snappy horns. A solid mainstream release.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 9

1. 3:49 – introduction: a collage of percussion, 1940s samples, synth bursts
2. 7:22 – standard recast as uptempo, riff-driven bop with a hard edge
3. 5:16 – catchy, upbeat city strut: breezy solos and a good-time groove
4. 7:54 – aching, mysterious ballad: dark and velvety, with oboe and echo
5. 2:52 – fretless bass slinks thru cool rhythms, bursts of piano energy
6. 8:03 – easygoing midtempo ballad with a lush, urbane feel
7. 5:58 – if Charlie Brown lived in the big city… likeable, upbeat shuffle groove
8. 9:34 – low, bluesy contemporary theme… solos thoughtful & searching
9. 3:53 – deep rhythm and soulful, spiritual lyrics; nice multitracked vocal
