ADAM SHULMAN QUINTET: Patterns of Change
Kabocha, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – Local pianist leads some of the Bay Area’s top bop players through a set of engaging original music. As on his previous CD, Shulman shows a penchant for calm, flowing compositions, like meandering streams, and these are where he makes his best statements.

Adam Shulman - piano
Dayna Stephens - tenor sax
Mike Olmos - trumpet, flugelhorn
John Wiitala - bass
Jon Arkin - drums

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 8

1. 6:15 – warm, waltzing sway: cool trumpet & piano walk through shifting time
2. 9:50 – relaxed flow: sax floats on small waves, piano takes flight, stern end
3. 7:00 – breezy modern bop: spiraling sax, questioning trumpet, quick piano
4. 5:10 – slow procession, full of soft curves: melancholy piano solo
5. 9:58 – sweet undulation with shimmering keyboard, introspective sax
6. 8:07 – easygoing strut, multiple melodic themes; trumpet sings, sax moans
7. 7:28 – gentle theme into moody chamber music; relaxed piano solo, rises
8. 8:17 – gliding midtempo: thoughtful horn & piano solos are very nice indeed
