THE FULLY CELEBRATED: Drunk on the Blood of the Holy Ones
AUM Fidelity, 2009

AVANT-GARDE – Funky, eclectic, very accessible sax/bass/drum trio with an air of subversive fun. Alto saxophonist Jim Hobbs pulls odd squeaks and metallic groans from his horn, but integrates them seamlessly with soulful melodies and exotic jaunts into world music. Highly recommended! Note: This band was formerly called the “Fully Celebrated Orchestra,” but they’ve always been a trio or quartet.

* * * * * | Play any track!

1. 4:47 – funky stroll, gradually becomes lopsided & lumpy; sax & bass solos
2. 3:25 – uptempo honkin’ stomp with some rambling diversions
3. 5:12 – stealthy dub-style atmosphere: sax pokes and prods in strange tones
4. 7:23 – East Asian sound: gentle melody, cool percussion, relaxed solos
5. 5:56 – catchy, birdlike, spare rhythmic groove: sax solo is quirky, confident
6. 6:59 – cool walking bass; whimpering sax “talks,” sings the blues & squeals
7. 5:20 – elusively exotic: shifting tempo, eastern scales; sax plays “out”
8. 8:35 – lovely, touch of India: calm sax wail over cool drums & rhythmic bass
