Decca Reviewed 2009-06-27 | ||
The Malian superstar vocalist/songwriter delivers her first release in six years. It’s full of hard-hitting lyrics about the life of women in her homeland, dealing with issues such as polygamy and forced underage marriage. Yet many songs have a funky, danceable beat that’s full of life & energy. Her voice carries the day, supple, warm, and versatile, backed by sweet percussion, hot backup singers, and a top-notch band. *1. Bright and upbeat Afro-funk w/cool flute/perc/vox. Driving. *2. Midtempo w/cool strings/perc/chorus. Great kora & Griot’s words. 3. Bright and funky-bluesy w/sweet vocals & a hip groove. 4. Mid/upbeat w/tripping fast spoken vocals & catchy perc/strings/organ. *5. Upbeat horns/perc, hot funk, with sexy vocals. Yum! 6. Bright and sunny, relaxed and sweet w/soaring vocals. 7. Relaxed midtempo sway with a gentle, warm sound. So pretty. *8. Mid/upbeat head-nodder w/a wonderful life-affirming sound. *9. Midtempo Afro funk w/strings, great vox, & a hint of the desert. *10. Trilling strings/bouncy perc. Midtempo w/gorgeous vocals. *11. Upbeat and driving w/great energy and a warm sound. |
