MATT WILSON QUARTET: That’s Gonna Leave a Mark
Palmetto, 2009

MODERN/AVANT JAZZ – After focusing on his Arts & Crafts band for a while, drummer Wilson brings his two-sax Quartet back to the studio for a fun, freewheeling romp that should grab fans of “normal” and “out” jazz alike. A real highwire act, totally unpredictable but with a friendly vibe that’s full of Wilson’s trademark warmth and humor.

Andrew D'Angelo - alto sax, bass clarinet
Jeff Lederer - tenor & soprano saxes, clarinet
Chris Lightcap - bass
Matt Wilson - drums

* * * * | All good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9

1. 4:17 – uptempo: twisty unison theme, exuberant sax solos go everywhere
2. 5:44 – easygoing slide ‘n’ sway, with an avant-raunchy SexMob touch
3. 4:28 – funky clarinets & drumbeat give way to oblique, rising digressions
4. 6:37 – a gawky ballad with a big goofy grin on its face. And pimples.
5. 4:04 – bebop classic, starts straight up but quickly receives a makeover
6. 6:58 – grubby, bluesy march/anthem: screamin’ saxes, down-home bass
7. 3:41 – calm tune, pretty with a melancholy air; nice clarinet interplay
8. 2:21 – avant-garde morsel: busy drums, crazy squealing from horns
9. 6:58 – upbeat groove, tricky rhythm section, whacked-out sax & drum solos
10. 4:04 – hymn: mostly gentle and relaxing, but sax solo adds a bit of heat
11. 3:37 – cover of 1970s hit; laid-back & loose: vocal chorus sings the title
