Album Review
Rhino
Reviewed 2009-12-11
Terrific laserbeam spaceship funk from Oakland. His label (Ubiquity) bills him as a jam-band inheritor of Galactic, but I couldn’t disagree more. Much more hyper, amped-up funk than laid-back sexy funk. Lots of layered falsetto vox, analog synth, porno bass. Does get repetitive. Pretend every track review* has the word “funky” in it.

RIYL: Jamie Lidell, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Shuggie Otis, Parliament.

01. Album intro & tone-setter. (0:39)
02.** Shuffle beat, stripped drum/bass/vox arrangement. Abrupt finish. (3:30)
03. Starts typical, goes crazy lazer noises in the last min. (2:46)
04. Soul-ballad. (5:01)
05. Toned down. (3:12)
06.*** Ridiculous groove. Hold out for the synth at 1:14. (3:35)
07. Heavier on the synth-horns than most of album. (2:45)
08.** Noisy breakbeat. (2:46)
09. Harp & string heavy ballad. Chest vox, unusually. (5:34)
10. Stripped arrangement: drums/bass/vox, touch of synth halfway. (3:34)
11. Acoustic guitar ditty. Very Ben Harper. (2:44)
12. Slower love song. Whistles & handclap groove. (2:39)
13. 80s porno soundtrack. Mostly instrumental...with a min of kid vox. (4:50)
14. Pleasant arpeggiated guitar intro to plodding, dark synth beat. (3:09)
