FULL BLAST: Black Hole
Atavistic, 2009
FREE JAZZ - Full Blast is reed maniac Peter Brötzmann along with bassist Marino Pliakas and drummer Michael Wertmüller. Many loud intense freakouts, but it ain’t just noise. Brötzmann is killer on saxes & clarinets, Wertmüller juices it up with high-energy ramblings, and Pliakas, when he isn’t an indistinct rumble, adds complex murmurs.
* * * * | Try any track!
1. 2:26 – mad sax skronk over fast fast drum beats and thick bass mud
2. 3:40 – rolling drums, squirrelly bass under a slow, thin clarinet line
3. 6:27 – very fast: high squealing horn in a rolling/tumbling rhythm, no let up
4. 3:42 – rending sax & rhythmic scribbles: really goes to town, then gets quiet
5. 3:00 – slow solo sax start, picks up a heavy thudding beat, dies
6. 6:26 – hard ululating wail becomes a swirling chase; cuts like a Ginsu knife
7. 10:35 – calm intro, near-silent drone slowly rises to thunderous tribal drums & keening clarinet, falls into thick pulse, surges for massive ending!
8. 4:27 – drum feature: big rolling beats lead the way for tight horn spirals
9. 2:32 – starts insistent & crazy, drops way down and quietly scurries away
10. 5:57 – firm, argumentative sound, drops to quiet squeal, steady chatter
11. 3:07 – solo sax tones, then spinning with drum rimshots; rises and falls
