JOHN HOLLENBECK LARGE ENSEMBLE: eternal interlude Sunnyside, 2009 MODERN JAZZ – Drummer Hollenbeck’s cutting-edge 20-piece band brings together a formidable cast of “downtown” musicians in startling, labyrinthine arrangements that blaze with cold fire. There are a lot of big bands pushing envelopes these days, but this is one of the best: steely and with the complex, interlocking movements of a Swiss watch. * * * * * | All impressive.
