HARRIS EISENSTADT: Canada Day
Clean Feed, 2009

AVANT-GARDE – This is the first recording by drummer Eisenstadt’s adventurous Canada Day quintet, but they’ve been working together for a few years. That experience, plus the first-rate lineup of musicians, lends the music a clean, accomplished feel, while the tight rhythm section and lush vibraphone shimmer give it an appealing texture that makes the often harsh horn tones go down easy. Very well done!

Nate Wooley - trumpet
Matt Bauder - tenor sax
Chris Dingman - vibraphone
Eivind Opsvik - bass
Harris Eisenstadt - drums

* * * * | All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5

1. 6:38 – catchy rhythm; vibes cascade over dissonant horns; great trumpet!
2. 6:52 – relaxed & sneaky: slow melody, sinuous sax exploration, calm vibes
3. 7:07 – heavy, slumping theme & chugging beat; sax zooms, trumpet brays
4. 9:21 – undulating, odd-meter pulse: vibes run in place; meaty bass solo
5. 6:59 – upbeat walk goes sour: sax argues w/drums, trumpet murmur & wail
6. 7:07 – staccato march, speech-like rhythm; winding trumpet, sax/vibe chat
7. 5:42 – dragging tempo, unresolved melody; relaxed bass & sax solos
8. 7:12 – sparse vibes, then enigmatic midtempo: pulls in multiple directions
