Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend

Improv music from an “all-non-star” cast, people from The USA Is a Monster, Dirty Projectors, Multitudes, delivers what you might expect: stuff that ranges from standard musical improv to noise orgies. Beautiful. Fans of early Sonic Youth, Brotzmann, the liner notes say Eno’s “Evening Star” but I haven’t gotten to that part yet, but am CERTAINLY looking forward to that shit!!! (never saw it, unless KZSU has the wrong copy of Evening Star).

1) improv crazy dissonant guitar leads the way through bass and drum meanderings, a certain heaviness gives way~5 min in to a rockin upbeat thing that never really takes off but stays subdued until about 10 minutes in the thing takes off and picks up a genuinely toe tapping beat, conceivably you could fast forward to about this point, keeps this them to the end
2) dark weird tone, droney distorto drone, lovely
3) this is a bashout improv that I pray is what they call “downtown jazz” in NYC and make the rich poseurs who show up run to the toilet to have to wipe up the blood that exploded from the hemorrhoid they’ve been nursing all day yielded… don’t worry mr. prep school ivy league, it mellows a bit toward the end and your blood will clot, subside (maybe, ha!)
4) this has a genuine melodic rocking shake your booty, or at least your head side-to-side rhythm that will make you happy, yay! Warning: it’s a bit dark and evil so don’t start asking your mom to dance to this one
5) chill start, some feedback, wanky drums, starting off like a true improvisation and well, it is!! Check it, drums, guitar bass eventually launch into a thing of absolute beauty
6) simple guitar lead rock riff (thank god for the gee-tar!), slow to mid paced, kinda stoney, just kinda keeps going, theres moments of lushness but I think its mostly a do-a-bong-and-lets-jam sorta piece
