KOMEDA PROJECT: Requiem
WM, 2009
MODERN JAZZ – This is KP’s second release highlighting the work of renowned Polish jazz musician and film composer Krzysztof Komeda. For this session the band recruited two newcomers to the music – bassist Scott Colley and drummer Nasheet Waits – seeking an openness and creative spark that would lift the music above mere recitation. That gamble pays off in a series of enigmatic pieces: ballads, Spanish-tinged marches, micro-suites stuffed with conflicted emotions.
Russ Johnson - trumpet, flugelhorn
Krzysztof Medyna - tenor & soprano saxophones
Andrzej Winnicki - piano
Scott Colley - bass
Nasheet Waits - drums
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10
1. 7:53 – episodic, built around 2 big dramatic chords; sax solo buzzes at end
2. 4:49 – sad, lovely piano & bass; the two-chord theme from #1 enters twice
3. 5:44 – lonely intro, then hard swing; trumpet solo runs & jumps
4. 6:22 – sexy ballad: lyrical trumpet channels night; piano spare but eloquent
5. 4:29 – slow march, great sound; trumpet & soprano sax trade off solos
6. 9:18 – straight-up jazzy start, then propulsive & spinning; strong sax & bass
7. 4:01 – slumping modern ballad: slow horns over wide-open rhythm section
8. 4:22 – slow horns, first over circus-y spin then fast rhythm; speedy piano
9. 6:20 – very slow, respectful melody; sax & trumpet trade smoky solos
10. 6:08 – lively midtempo modern jazz: winding sax solo, bright piano
