GORDON BEEFERMAN: Music for an Imaginary Band
Generate, 2009
AVANT-GARDE – Surprisingly accessible septet with a 1960s progressive jazz feel on side A and a very modern, delicately structured sound on B: three saxophones, trumpet, piano, bass drums. Pianist is the leader but nearly inaudible most of the time. Two short pieces on 33rpm 7” vinyl.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: A, B
Side A. 4:28 – Very cool: trilling, chugging theme; then baritone sax goes nuts while other horns jump over quick bass & drums; sax & piano argue, then sax bobs & weaves through maze of horns.
Side B. 5:06 – Relaxed and moody modern jazz, not far out at all: carefully arranged, with thick and slightly vinegary harmonies and brief solo spaces.
