Talking Heads-esque indie-psych pop. Yes, this band is named after an English poet and yes, the album is named after the lead singer of The Flaming Lips. No, neither of these facts really relate to the band’s music, which is at times cheerful, spacey and melancholy, and always with ample use of synthesizers, reverb, and vocal distortion. Sounds like the best parts ofClap Your Hands, Tilly and the Wall, and—ok—The Flaming Lips, with dashes of Broken Social Scene and Tears for Fears.
No FCCs. Recommended tracks: 3,5,7.
1. Upbeat, echo-y synth-driven anthem. [3:52]
2. Psychedelic indie rock tune. Would go well with anything from Islands to Sunset Rubdown to Tilly and the Wall. Play this track, ye hipsters! [4:16]
3. Funky and bold track with lots of great, chaotic instrumentation and distorted vocals (a bit like the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah effect). [2:38]
4. Pretty uninteresting ballad. Vocals sound vaguely U2-like. [3:12]
5. Synth-tastic dancy number. Almost like Hall and Oates, on the moon. Wild! Also the title track. [3:11]
6. A very chipper number with choral vocals. [3:57]
7. Fun indie rock anthem, complete with hand claps. [2:44]
8. Brief, wicked, dirty guitar solo. [0:36]
9. Atmospheric song with call and response-like verses and space sounds. [3:58]
10. Bit of a dissonant, downer track. Wolf Parade-esque. [4:54]
11. Short ambient instrumental track. Great for behind a quick PSA! [1:12]
12. Neat atmospheric track. Short. [1:29]
