An arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s 19th century virtuoso piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, using modern electric instruments and orchestral elements. An intriguing new take on classical standards, although some interpretations fare better than others. No FCC concerns. Try 10, 11, 3.
1) Lilting, plucky electric strings set to a sort of waltz rhythm.
2) Harpsichord, penny whistle, and kazoo. As annoying as the description sounds.
3) Electric guitar and spot on percussion with a nice progression of sound layers.
4) Haunting but plodding melody by the trombone, which finally picks up interest in the final minute.
5) Frenzied and circus-like song that quickly comes to an anti-climax.
6) Mysterious track, with unexpected gaps in sound.
7) Too many instruments to cram into eighteen seconds.
8) Somber and menacing tune, with a melodic first half but cacophonous second.
9) Exclusively wailing and grunting voices. Off-key male and on-key female.
10) An exciting take on Mussorgsky’s famous pieces, with striking drums and guitar.
11) The unique track of the album; a tranquil piano and bassoon duet.
