DANA HALL: Into the Light

MODERN BOP – Wow! Here’s the sort of debut that really serves notice: forceful yet impeccably crafted, with strong compositions, a few nods to the masters and, above all, a whole lot of rock-solid playing. Dana Hall is the drummer in trumpeter Terell Stafford's band, and he brings most of that group along for the ride here. Hall is explosive and intense, pushing the band at every turn, and his compositions cut to the chase with old-school directness. This disc is a real winner.
