GARY PEACOCK & MARC COPLAND: Insight Pirouet, 2009 MODERN JAZZ – This bass/piano duo is truly stunning. Peacock and Copland are longtime associates, and have appeared together on some trio dates for Pirouet in recent years, but this setting really brings out how tightly woven they are. Alternately virtuosic and spare, Peacock’s bass work pairs perfectly with the wistful, tragicomic air and deep underlying stillness of Copland’s piano. Not always the happiest music, but excellent. * * * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13 1. 4:22 – uptempo, sparkling take on Miles Davis’ “All Blues,” with lots of depth 2. 2:23 – mostly solo piano: trips lightly over stepping-stone chords as if lost 3. 6:23 – floating Miles/Bill Evans tone poem; bittersweet sound, drifts casually 4. 2:43 – speeding basslines rush down the center; piano dodges and feints 5. 6:45 – unsettling cinematic atmosphere in the melody, nice solos from each 6. 2:19 – delicate structure, rises from low chords to distant heights 7. 4:18 – piano creeps around eloquent bass monologue, they trade places 8. 6:49 – bass intro, duo steps warily: space & freedom, then walking groove 9. 2:21 – bright snappy jazz groove; hints of sadness but mostly fun 10. 7:20 – sweet, tender ballad; relatively straightforward presentation 11. 4:48 – Dave Brubeck standard, lilting and upbeat 12. 3:44 – delicate, classically-tinged tone poem, stately and beautiful 13. 3:36 – playful, winking standard; bass takes the melodic lead [ Fo ] 02/07/10 |
