ERI YAMAMOTO TRIO: In Each Day, Something Good AUM Fidelity, 2010 MODERN JAZZ – Another beautiful album of deep, emotionally rich original music from this Japanese-born pianist and her trio, which has been working together for 14 years! A master storyteller at the keys, Yamamoto is distinctive for her warm, introspective touch, moments of joyous expansion and tunes that suck you into fully-realized worlds. You’d never guess, but tracks 3,6,7,8,9 are a score for a silent film. Eri Yamamoto - piano David Ambrosio - bass Ikuo Takeuchi - drums * * * * | Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10 1. 7:44 – calmly gazes into the distance, but rises in a surge from underneath 2. 5:37 – happy swinging stroll: piano solo fractures the beat and skips merrily 3. 6:28 – relaxed little tune, grows intricate, then serious over laid-back rhythm 4. 5:47 – upbeat and rather snappy, but with glimpses of emotional complexity 5. 6:15 – hints of North Africa in this sad ballad: cool rhythm & intricate piano 6. 6:44 – quick flowing tune: piano trips and wanders; rolling drum solo 7. 4:41 – tender stroll with a bit of soul; thoughtful bass solo 8. 4:54 – steps carefully, with a slightly nostalgic air 9. 4:52 – tick-tock walking theme: piano explores, bass probes carefully 10. 7:35 – warm, satisfied sound, familiar and welcoming; nice solos [ Fo ] 01/24/10 |
