NOZEN: Live! Au Upstairs Malasartes Musique, 2009 AVANT/KLEZMER – This engaging quartet out of Quebec blends modern/avant jazz and Eastern European Jewish music. They’re not as raucous as some other groups in this vein, preferring mysterioso creeps and slides for the most part, but the music heats up significantly when the occasion calls for it. * * * | Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 1. 6:38 – spoken intro; bouncy midtempo theme; exotically swirling solos 2. 6:05 – cool, funky low-key groove, drums keep it rolling, second half livelier 3. 4:42 – brisk bounce: sax solo has a steady burn, drums stay busy 4. 6:49 – slow, sweetly melancholy: sax and guitar share some quality time 5. 5:55 – low, propulsive groove: prowling guitar, agitated sax, hot drum solo 6. 6:26 – sneaky glide and a calm bounce; briefly breaks out into wildness 7. 3:40 – low and sneaky groove adds just a hint of Spain, lyrical sax 8. 4:42 – relaxed dance, but wailing guitar/sneering sax make it loud & edgy 9. 7:27 – cool mystery stroll: bass drifts into dark alleyway, sax gets squirrelly 10. 3:07 – sweet, nostalgic ballad; sax & guitar stick close 11. 6:38 – sinister bass grinds under rockin’ guitar, lilting/wailing sax 12. 10:57 – slow, melancholy folksong builds up… [~5 mins, then one minute silence, then the same track played backwards] [ Fo ] 04/04/10 | ||
