Album Review

Slack-rock at its very best. Loose and calm to the point of laziness, with striking emotivity that sneaks up on you out of nowhere. Remember when Weezer had that cool shy-angsty-loser thing going on? Here's a band getting that right and sustaining it across some pretty different styles. Can't go wrong with anything on here, but my picks: 10, 4, 1, 8, 7, 17. FCC: 3, 13, 21.
–Andy

**1 - Summery and wistful with pleading vocals
*2 - Bee-Thousand-Era GBV instrumentals with great lo-fi growl on the bass/guitar
3 - FCC: "fucked" easily avoidable, just fade out a few seconds before the end; grungy, alt-rock guitar pangs
**4 - Rambling talking/sing-song vocals over bass into rocking choruses; fun as hell and distinct as they come
5 - Long twangy guitar intro, darker and very Pixies-reminiscent
6 - Blues-rock number, kind of a brit-punk bite to the vocals
**7 - Bright and cheery but intense; great falsetto "ooh" hooks; indie culture commentary
**8 - Grooving build-up at beginning, jangly R.E.M. guitar parts; ends at -1:12, then a slower instrumental jam
*9 - Calm and dreamy, almost sounds like a Galaxie 500 cover
**10 - Raging power-pop rock-out; all kinds of California name-dropping
11 - Downbeat and slower with big guitar
*12 - Snarling, with low distorted guitar, and relatively subdued until breakthrough at toward end
*13 - FCC: "fuck"; Grateful Dead instrumentation, folky and longing
*14 - Could very easily pass as Guided by Voices; catchy power-pop with distorted vocals
15 - Murky guitar rock with a skate-punk vibe
16 - Modest Mouse; subdued guitar, alternately mellow/exasperated vocals
**17 - Mellow, swooning, catchy pop; weird intro, great baritone backing vox on chorus
*18 - Slowed-down, quieted bar-rock with jankily folky instrumentation
19 - More GBV power-pop with drawn-out build-ups; ends -0:24 followed by quick jam
*20 - Mellow opening stretch picks up to darker guitar-rock
21 - FCC: "fuck"; Simple, electric folk song; great bright guitar riffs
*22 - Dark anthem about R.E.M.: hilarious and awesome for R.E.M. fans; long, strange outro starts about -0:45
23 - Sonic Youth; low, snarling start, long build-up w/ anti-climax
