ALGERNON -GHOST SURVEILLANCE.
(CUNEIFORM RECORDS.)
as reviewed by mr. esq.

(note: this was the very 1st album i reviewed as d.j. trainee underscum. thank you.)

experimental, instrumental. the big influence here is krautrock! heavy can fans. there's also elements of no-wave, jazz fusion, ambient, and electronica. and rush (the ghost of neal peart is everywhere!). if you like can, cluster, neu!, eno, add n to x, tortoise (and a lot of vibes) -you'll love this.
challenging&original.
atmospheric&intriguing. sometimes beautiful.
sometimes... it gets too jazzy fusey&neal pearty for my tastes.
overall: lovely. highly recommended.
(love the album cover/packaging/concept =very badder-meinhoff! they even look like badder-meinhoff's in the band photo! the photos are lovely. and haunting. too bad for you, since i had to type over them.)
algernon is from chicago and led by guitarist/composer david miller. algernon includes members from/of:ted sirota's rebel souls, zing!, blink, tim daisy's new fracture quartet, larval, and fareed haque's flat earth ensemble.
FCC CLEAN.
SUGGESTED TRACKS: 3, 6, 7, 10.

1. driving intro; heavy vibes; gets crunchy a minute in. kinda sounds like low playing cluster. pace picks up at end.
2. repetitive bass opens. okey, now, i'm hearing can. getting too jazzy fusey for me. getting dreamy. oh no!: it's neal peart.
(2nd half is best -organ heavy; nice fade.)
*3. ominous organ farting. mini-peart solos. vibes. tinkering reminds me of add n to x.
4. damn you neal!
5. the tinkling...sounds like no-wave violin molestering...and the opening was so pleasant. jazzy fusey. ooo! -marquee moon type ending!- oh, they tricked me!
*6. pleasant&vibey. lovely. midsection has a low/my bloody valentine ambience. (1st half is great; 2nd half sounds like neal's playing 'stepping out' by joe jackson.)
*7. BEST TRACK: rocks! fast&driving&heavy metal&new wave&no wave sudden storm&it's over.
8. metallic opening. vibes give way to piano. sweet ambient after halfway mark. jet fighter going down soundscaping. sabsludge ending.
9. gang of four/wire guitars. vibes vs. neal (neal wins). no-wave noodling. zappa.
*10. BEST TRACK II: like another green world. very relaxing. piano/theramin heavy.
